Generation5 Tips and Tricks

Generation5 has a lot of nice features that can help with your browsing. This page helps you discover some of them.

News

Each news article has a category icon associated with it. These icons can be clicked to filter out all other categories. For example, if you are viewing an article about the AIBO, and would like to see more recent articles, simply click the AIBO icon and the news page will update accordingly.

Here are some samples to try:

Article Updates

When articles are listed, the last date they were edited (or submitted) is also listed. If the article was added in the last two weeks, a New! marker appears. If is new within the last four weeks, Recent is displayed. If an article has been updated in the last two weeks, an Updated marker appears, if an article has been updated in the last four weeks, Updated is displayed. After that, all markers disappear.

News Feed

You can now receive Generation5 from any program that supports the widely used RSS news-exchange format! Generation5 supports an RSS/RDF newsfeed for both the latest artices and latest news. These can be found at:

http://www.generation5.org/data/xml/articles.rss http://www.generation5.org/data/xml/news.rss

To the right you can see a screenshot of the excellent Trillian Pro with the RSS plugin activated and the latest Generation5 news and articles. Many programs are capable of viewing RSS files, such as news ticker programs, screensavers, even some websites like Slashdot.

Each program/website will differ how you enter this information, please contact your program developer if you require help.

Developer note: The RSS feeds also include extra information not in the RSS namespace, but instead under a gen5 namespace that can be used to extract additional information (such as the news category, author and more). These can be utilized if you are parsing the XML file yourself, or formatting it using a XSL stylesheet.

Mobile Sites

Generation5 also has two mobile sites: one for WAP users and another for PDA/Smartphone users. The WAP page allows you to view all news items, article descriptions for the latest articles, even complete access to the glossary. The PDA/Smartphone site extends it a little further with colour, a few pictures and access to Generation5 review information. For more information, see the Generation5 Mobile page.

Printing

While Generation5 does offer "printable version" version for all articles, it also uses a feature of CSS (a World Wide Web standard method for formatting webpages on different media) to define how any Generation5 should print (within reason). Any good browser should support CSS media commands, if so try to print (or Print Preview in Internet Explorer) this page and see if it looks any different.
