A* Explorer

Download here (123K) - Note: you will need MFC42.DLL to run this.

A* Explorer is designed to help people understand the workings of the A* algorithm. It includes a lot of features including breakpoints and breaking conditions, stepping the A* algorithm, viewing the open and closed lists and much more. Here are a few screenshots showing some of the these features:

Demonstrate the bitmap import The debug options The water feature extension, along with the extensions dialog box The standard DLL options dialog A terrain example

A* Explorer uses a more advanced, rewritten version of CPathfinder. The new version has a few additional callback function pointers to allow notification messages to be passed about.

Version 2.0

BETA Release 2 solves a variety of problems Release 1 had, plus adds a few new features.

Version 2.0 sports a large number of additional features including:

  • A brand new DLL-based interface. A* heuristics are now treated as plugins.
  • Map extensions. Program your own additions to A* Explorer easily and effectively.
  • Bitmap import feature. Import small bitmaps into A* Explorer to use as height maps.
Note that unfortunately, A* Explorer 2.0 Release 2 is not backwards compatible with old *.ASE maps.
